BCL of Texas & Bank of America Hosts Luncheon Recognizing First-time Homeowners through Home of Our Own Program

In honor of National Homeownership Month in June, Business Community Lenders of Texas and Bank of America honored Dallas-area individuals and families who had recently become first-time homeowners through BCL of Texas’ state-wide Home of Our Own homeownership program at a luncheon at La Hacienda on Saturday, June 17, 2006. BCL of Texas, along with the educators who worked with these families, helped over 350 families to become homeowners in the first six months of 2006.  Five families will be recognized for their homeownership goal achievement.

The families shared their remarkable stories of how they overcame obstacles to become homeowners, including Roberto C. Torres who rented an apartment for over ten years.  He bought his home for not only his immediate family, but also his mother, sister, and her two children to also live with him. Rosa Ríos Valdez, executive director of BCL of Texas, was also on hand and spoke about the services the organization offers the community, including homebuyer education, financial literacy classes, commercial loans for business expansions, community facility loans and entrepreneurship assistance.  The North Texas Regional Director, Andy Rittler, from State Senator John Cornyns’ Office also attended.

The Home of Our Own luncheon is part of a national initiative to inform community members of available homeownership resources during National NeighborWorks® Week, taking place during June 3-10.
